These are the meanings of the songs from ZOEgirl’s debut CD. Since the girls never provided their own stories behind these songs, I wrote down what they mean based on the lyrics.
“I Believe”
This song is more than what it appears to be-a simple proclamation of belief in God. It begins off by saying “I used to close my eyes and pray…” It is the story of someone who never believed before, and who now does. It was ZOEgirl’s first single ever.
“Anything is Possible”
This song is of God singing to us, promising that He will answer our prayers if we just believe. The beginning of the song addresses atheists. “I know that you’ve been thinking/I see it in your eyes/You’re holding on to something/Still you don’t know why..” It’s about atheists who refuse to believe, but without good reason. God can do miracles and things that we never thought possible, if we just believe!
“Suddenly”
This is a song about how when God is with us, we can put away our fears. He is always there for us and it is important to realize that. The beginning starts off with a girl who is afraid and cannot sleep because of her anxiety, but once God is in her life, it all changes. He will be there until the end of time.
“Give Me One Reason”
This sing is about a girl who has a boyfriend whom she gave herself to in every way. But then, something changed-she got saved. This song is about how she is walking away from this ungodly, impure relationship to pursue a devoted walk with God. She still prays that her boyfriend will get saved, but she cannot stay with him until he also accepts Jesus. She also promises to stay chaste even after her relationship with this boy: “I always thought you would understand the reasons why/Why I don’t want to do the things that I used to do/Now that my heart and my soul/Belong to God and God alone.”
“Living For You”
This is a song about someone who is expressing their ecstasy after having been born again and saved by Jesus. They are saying that they will testify to the world about how great God is and from this day forward, they will live for Him. The newly saved Christian in this song later expresses the certainty of the gospel as well saying: “Some may question what is right/But in my heart I can’t deny/Once I was blind, yet now I see/You saved my soul now I am Yours for eternity”. Remember when John the Baptist’s disciples asked Jesus if he was truly the one sent from God? He said to look around them and see what happened: the blind see, the deaf hear, the dead live, the lame walk. This person is saying they know Jesus is the way because of the change they’ve seen in their life.
“No You”
This is a song about a Christian thinking back to the time of their life when they didn’t have Jesus in it. They are shocked to think that they lived for some time without Him, and are now imagining what life would be like if Jesus wasn’t in it anymore. The person singing says that without Jesus, there wouldn’t be any them, any us. There would be no us, without Him.
“Little Did I Know”
This song is about a girl who lived a double life. On one hand, she was a “Christian”. On the other hand, she was also a material girl, wanting to have the latest thing and sinning, thinking that her mistakes would not have big consequences. “I thought that I was living forever/I thought my smile’d get me in”. Later, she realizes she didn’t need the temporary highs the world had to offer, considering that Jesus is sufficient. He is just a prayer away, and can help us overcome obstacles in life.
“Stop Right There”
This song is a slap in the face of the devil. It can be considered a girl pushing away a sinful boyfriend, but really, it can be about peer pressure in general or specifically a way of moving away from Satan. The girl in this song is saying “I don’t have to give in to your demands/The power’s not in your hands”. God is the one who has all authority, and this person who is tempting you to sin cannot make you do anything. God will give us the ability to overcome temptation. “But you see, I found the truth/I have been redeemed and so we’re through!”
“Upside Down”
People are always trying to find ways to keep up with our society in terms of the newest gadgets, products and technology. This song is about that and how God is enough.
“Live Life”
This is a song of praise. It has a light message. It is just a song of thanks to God about how he frees his children from bondage. “Since I heard Your name/I have never been the same/Jesus, is so precious to me”.
“Constantly”
This is a song about someone who is reluctant to give themselves over to God. “But the closer I get/the harder it is/I find myself pulling away/from all of the things I believe.” And “I face constant disbelief/That You could ever love me/Knowing the secrets I keep”. The person in this song is asking God to not give up on them, and in the end, He is still faithful, so they praise God for helping them to overcome their disbelief. He constantly lets us know how much He loves us.
